They're annoying, unprofessional and if you can't just express what you want to say using words then you should just draw a cartoon instead of resorting to computer generated smiley faces and frowny faces. Ugh!
These don't bother me as much(JK)...but mostly bc I abbreviate too often.
This article by David Pogue of the NYTimes tries to update online shorthand. IMHO it's time for an update. Just because someone is capable of having FCAO doesn't mean they have to without being efficient with their letters.

I hate myself for this post, but I do like David Pogue.
