Ever steal anything from CostCo?

I did, with my friend K from college (who JUST had her second son). It was an ACCIDENT!

[SO glad I just re-read that...I mean the theft was an accident, NOT the second son, Robert Spencer was totally and lovingly on purpose, stealing a cartoon VHS (DVD's didn't exist yet, I'm old) was the accident]

She stole (I mean, we) the cartoon version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Again, I swear it was an accident. (my parents read this...my 2-3 subscribers(I only have 2 parents, the potential 3rd is either Joel or A)...they're not biased tho...they also think everything I own looks good on me and my hair always is pretty and I think now they've said all that bc I look like them, so they have to think so....thoughts?My hair does look pretty good today...it's the clip I bought earlier...it makes my hair flip the right way)

moving on....today is SUCH a tangent day. Maybe I'm hormonal...

The point is that my college-missing, English-major-being, new-york-restaurant-loving self adores the wall paper in this restaurant's bathroom. Check it out here, you'll see what I mean.
I also LOVE the pink padded-is-the-wrong-word door. Ruched is wrong too. Pintucked, also wrong, arg! ummm, TUFTED! Whoopie. Button-tufted door.

Want to see your ipod playlist live?

I mean live like "live in concert!" not live, like "how do you live like this?"

Moving on....

This little program will make it all happen for you. Plus, it's brilliant and super cool!

This is what the website says:

iConcertCal is a free iTunes plug-in that monitors your music library and generates a personalized calendar of upcoming concerts in your city.

This is the review I found on Blueprint Blog, the Martha Stewart magazine site (I like her title and the screen shot I'll try to post here):

iLove It!
Posted by Shira, Editorial Assistant, Art
I’ve long declared that if the surgeon general deemed it safe to implant my iPod in my body, I would get that sucker put in there pronto. As a total music junkie and quasi tech geek, I snagged an iPod about two weeks after they were born into the Apple family. In the five-plus years since, I’ve filled up numerous iPods, discovered new artists, and seen some incredible live shows as a result.
But now my musical universe is even better thanks to my discovery of iConcertCal. Plug this free software download into your iTunes library and it will bring up local tour dates for the artists you listen to and provide links to online ticket vendors (you can nix musicians you don't quite enjoy to the level of shelling out for a live show). Plus, you can sync it with iCal and then load that onto your iPod. It’s this whole cyclical wonder that keeps you totally in the loop about who’s coming to town. Rock on.

Shows I want to see...

The Little Mermaid - MUST SEE THIS
The Lion King - been on forever and still have an interest
Spring Awakening - still getting FAB reviews
My Fair Lady..I mean Pygmalion w/Claire Danes - like her, like British accents, like Julie Andrews
The thing w/Kevin Kline and Jennifer Garner, oh Cyrano (AKA Roxanne the movie)

umm, what else?

Young Frankenstein the Musical (have tix w/Dad)

San Fran

Mr. Poley, are you reading this!? There's a warehouse sale you have to go to. Not some hip warehouse party that you go to, but an actual furniture warehouse, with great stuff. Dad likes it too....you'll recognize the chairs that we have in real people size and mini.

Yes, people I know it's in San Fransisco, my little brother will be taking orders....right?

Don't spend enough time downtown?

Haven't gotten your fill of hipster yet this summer? Summer? It's almost October! I know, but in NYC it's been hot and frizzy (I had to stop and buy an emergency hair clip this morning, FYI - the Sephora on 42nd btwn Grand Central(there's extra streets over there) and 5th does not have "accessories" so I went to Laila Rowe(sp?) and got an adorable(I think) clip w/a "crystal" on it. I have it in black too and I got one for lamereubu. Anyways, it matches my new higher-waisted wide-leg jeans and my brown tie neck top from H&M under my white cardi from H&M (neither of which are from the new one that just opened across the street from my office) and my brown wedge ON shoes... I'm a bargain shopper with expensive tastes...it's OK bc I'm wearing diamonds.

Wait, what was I talking about? Oh yeah, downtown and summer. Normally street fairs are a summer-only event, however, since it is just the beginning of Fall and it feel like summer, for today at least, there's one more street fair to mention. Where downtown? East 4th Street between the Bowery and 2nd Avenue in the LES. It's gonna be FAB (Fourth Arts Block) so you all should go.

Tangent much? oy!

Know of a good sale? Send us the tip....

Every single thing we put in our mouths was....

chocolate? no
parmesan? close, but no
artichoke? getting warmer....

DELICIOUS!!!

Morandi was FANTASTIC! Hot and sweaty, but the chef can't control the weather...

We got the artichoke special, but I wld've been just as pleased (I'm sure) w/the fried artichokes or the artichokes w/lemon and parmesan.

Instead I got the hand-rolled spaghetti w/lemon & parmesan. It was the perfect little amt and was delish!

We split the appetizer special artichoke and also the tuna, salmon and other kind of fish carpaccio (which is really sashimi in an Italian resto) with capers (which, luckily easily slid off) and some other green sauce thing. Also, excellent! Everything tasted 100% fresh, and not oh, that day fresh, but like they JUST that second made it all.

The hazelnut chocolate cake with HOME MADE whipped cream, not that spray garbage, was delish too and I wld've tried many other desserts....obviously.

My friend loved her seafood dish and we split a very nice bottle of Riesling (It was really hot out!).

I can't wait to go back soon!!!

DUMBO

I lived in Bklyn Heights so I went to Dumbo before it was DUMBO.

Just so you can stop wondering: Down Under the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridge Overpass(es)

Anyways, there's an art festival there this weekend that's bound to be cool. Even tho they have a Starbucks, I think it's still a pretty hip 'hood.

Presented by the DUMBO Arts Center.

Want to change the world? VOTE

Or at least go learn more about the candidates. I already know who I'm voting for...but in case you don't Mr. Obama will be in Washington Square Park at 5pm today....probably trying to get the NYU vote.

Tailor - An experience in "molecular gastronomy"

NEW RESTO ALERT!

So I went last night with a friend from highschool and we had a great time, because old friends always do, but i think we both left hungry.

The menu is divided into Sweet and Salty. Fine enough. Each side has abt 6-7 items, all of which are appetizer size and small even for that. It's one of the resots with foam and gelee and crunchy coffee(more abt that later) so you have to be ready for an adventure.

The drinks were good! A very VERY interesting menu. It's like jelly belly jelly beans (I've been to the factory (don't ask) and they won't tell you how they get the magical flavors in there, and I'd imagine this chef won't tell either) but not just the flavor, here the textures of the food have been altered and played-with. Like the crunchy coffee, which is EXACTLY what it sounds like. We got red pepper jelly candy, which is really that passover candy goopy jelly ring stuff, like Turkish Delight but grosser. Anyways, so it's red pepper flavor. I'm expecting spicy, but no. It tasted JUST like red bell pepper, JUST like! Bizzaro!

What else, oh, one of the drinks was whisky or Bourbon with smoked coke. Yes, smoked coke. So i asked for a taste, and guess what. JUST LIKE coke, cold and wet and coke-tasting but SMOKED. And not like bacon smoked, but like the freaking coke had been thru a smoker machine thing. VERY odd.

Here's the list of what we ordered, thankfully provided by my friend (I don't like to use names, except for Joel, the blog creator, and A for my husband and lamereubu for my mom but only bc people are crazy nuts about their privacy these days and I'm not sure anyone wants to be googled...not that anyone I know does that...ever...all the time...):

They should leave a menu on the table so you remember the variety of flavors and textures you are supposed to be eating.

whiskey with egg whites on top- that's her drink, I do not like whiskey and this was quite tasty
smoked coke- see explanation above, coke that's smoked, believe it!
scrumpy- apple cider in the UK, like colour and favour, but scrumpy=apple cider. this was my drink with some pink clove something and vodka. good, but I was too hungry to drink the whole thing.
snapper with watermelon- (Salty) tiny piece of fish w/long, jicama shaped pieces of watermelon
foie gras with peanut butter - (Salty) the whole thing tasted like peanut butter.
panna cotta tube & corn ice cream- (Sweet) don't remember the, oh yeah, duh, caramel panna cotta but shaped like a tube and corn ice cream (but it was one of those things where you're saying what flavor is this? what is it? then some memory is sparked and it doesn't really go and then you realize what it is...)
butter tube- homemade butter in same shape as panna cotta, with delish cinnamon/raisin bread
banana and wasabe- (Sweet) caramelized banana and wasabe flavored ice cream (don't know if we're guessing on the flavor bc it was spicy (which isn't a good combo for ice cream) or if that's been confirmed), this was OK too.
bell pepper flavored gum drops - see above for explanation

This is getting long, but it was quite an experience. I think it'd be a perfect place for drinks and 1-2 snacks before real dinner. Cool place, SO cool there was no sign on the door, and everyone knows that's how you know!

Just read this on an example of ridiculous things on menus: Cayenne pepper-infused, freeze-dried chocolate nuggets bathed in marshmallow-star anise foam: There are maybe two or three decent practitioners of molecular gastronomy in the world, so unless your name is Ferran AdriĆ  [no idea who he is], leave the foam on your latte.

UPDATE: This post gets longer and longer...I just saw this review which may (i haven't read the whole thing yet) shed some light on the whole molecular blahblah whatever. Food is Foam, Foam is food, coffee is crunchy, whatever. I just don't wanna be hungry. The waiters uniforms were cool...like pinstripe-y "tailored" clothes.

Right or Wrong or Just Cool?

As an English major, a lawyer (American history is kinda impt, boring, but impt), lover of historical fiction, and someone who once lived in London this is a little nuts.

That these types of things are even for sale strikes me as just wrong. It should be in a museum. I don't really care what they're using the $ for. However if I had the space, time and $$$ I'd buy it and donate it to the Smithsonian, or wherever.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present....the Magna Carta.

All of that said, I must admit I am a bit awed by history. But really, it's the freaking MAGNA CARTA! Hello, constitution, bill of rights, kings and queens, rolling British hills and estates, powdered hair (not the bumble and bumble kind), Victoria Beckham!

So I made a list...

I know, me? I made a list? Believe it people. Alas, I was WAY too ahead of myself and I've failed you. The Starbucks event already happened (don't worry, I missed it too), but the other things on the list are still open and available. Hmm, where could I have been that I cldn't manage to even post these....anyways, here they are...still in list form. ENJOY, JES

  1. I have to have this: Paul and Joe brush holder...perfect on any vanity
  2. Don't worry, you can visit me at work, we have the Treats Truck. Everything is close when you work in the center of the universe. Yeah, everyone thinks it's Times Square but you can't get more central than 5th ave and 42nd street. Perfection. Near all the transportation, near a brand new (better open soon) H&M [ALERT - OPENING TOMORROW AT NOON. ALERT ALERT ALERT], near a Beard Papa in a seemingly random 2-3 bock Japanese neighborhood. But, not to worry East and West Villagers....just come meet me at work until your Bear Papas opens and your cravings will be satiated.
  3. Obviously someone IMPORTANT read this post on EventsbyJES because low and behold (anyone know the linguistic history of that saying? please let me know....) in Rockefeller Center the Starbucks Coffee event will be taking place on Sept 20th from 4-8pm!!! [IT's OVER, ALAS] PERFECT for that after lunch, early afternoon, ohmigod-it's-only-4pm-? work-day slump. [If the link doesn't bring you directly to the NY part, just, ummm, click on "NY" or whatever they have there that indicates the location closest to me]
  4. Spa Week in NYC is October 15-21. Great deals at spas all over town!!! Perfect early-fall time to slough off your remaining tan and get ready for some new winter make-up. I'm skipping the red lips (again) but I would never miss a spa week....for ANY reason!
  5. Back to School, 1, 2, 3 and A, B, C. Here is your first lesson: A is no longer for Apple, or Aardvark, or Airplane. That's SO over. A is for Ankle Boots (which I've been trying to tell you since my first posts! Listen people, listen!) Here's the rest of your lesson. Learn it well or all the cool kids might not play four-square with you at recess.

Things to do in October 2007

6th: Open House New York

12th: Elizabeth: The Golden Age comes out!!! This is the sequel to Kate Blanchett's other movie where she played Elizabeth. I just (surprise) finished a book about this time period (I LOVE historical fiction...see my favorite books link to the right) and can't wait to see this!

18th: Klimt exhibition opens at the Neue Galerie. Word is they have GREAT apple strudel at the Cafe Sabarsky (see also Wallse)...

29th: Tom Stoppard's Rock 'n' Roll is in its last week of previews. It did super well in London's West End (like our Broadway but cooler because it's in London...ya know, where Harry Potter showed off his....) hmm, just read it's sold out....check craigslist for tix

30th: if all of the above wasn't enough....wait for it....Backstreet's back! The Backstreet Boys, minus one member (whomever) release their new album. Hope it's better than Britney's "come back."

Things to do in November 2007

3rd: Museum of Natural History exhibit H2O: Water=Life exhibit opens. I still wanna see Mythic Creatures, but someone won't go with me...aren't boy supposed to like monsters and stuff? Who are his parents!?

7th: Just one of the reasons people are saying Britney was craptastic: Sarah Silverman is at Carnegie Hall as part of the New York Comedy Festival. I LOVE her.

23rd: Visit the origami tree at the Museum of Natural History. COOL! Origami is just fun!

24th: Wish you could tap dance? I was horrific. OK at ballet and jazz, but really tragic at tap, so I can really appreciate a good tapper. How do they do thong wing things? Want to see the best? or at least the fastest? James Devine, the world's fastest tap dancer, as certified by Guinness will be at the New Victory Theater. He can tap 38 taps per second. I think he's a robot.

Here Comes the Sun

This Saturday you can do yoga in the Park! Go to Rumsey Playfield in Central Park and take classes, have tastings, etc...

It should be nice out so go to the Park, do your sun salutations or downward dogs or whatever and get healthy.

Furniture Store Event

Check out Mitchell Gold & Bob William's new SoHo store. Opening party sounds fun!

I know I already mentioned that I went to Per Se

But I found this video to show how gorgeous it is. Jonathan Benno was the chef the night we were there.

for whatever reason (that I'll investigate) the video isn't working. Here's the link to the site w/the video.

UPDATE: Found an interesting article about a book written by a former waitress at Per Se.

Spa Week is HERE!

Check out the details here.

Advance notice of new resto!!!

TV chef Gordon Ramsay ruthlessly sacked his right-hand man after a decade of service... because he wasn't being foul enough to the staff. Ramsay axed Neil Ferguson, who had worked for him for 10 years, because he was being too pleasant to workers at Ramsay's flagship New York restaurant. Now Neil, 35, who worked 17 hours a day for Ramsay, is set to open a rival restaurant in New York called Allen and Delancey.

So, a chef with 10 years of training with Ramsay, who is "too pleasant" will be opening his own resto downtown (WAY cooler than 50whatever st (altho I ate there and it was amazing-delicious-gorgeous-great-service-etc)), I'm guess at Allen and Delancey streets...

I think at work I'm going to "sack" candidates, instead of telling them their projects are over. Everyone knows using foreign words makes things better.

Are you there God? It's me....

Miss your old friends? Margaret? Superfudge?

Meet their maker:
From Daily Candy:
MEETJudy Blume
What: Legendary author’s autographing copies of Soupy Saturdays with the Pain & the Great One.
Why: She’s super(fudge).
When: Sat., 2 p.m.
Where: Bank Street Bookstore, 2879 Broadway, at 112th St. (212-678-1654).

Fashion Week

I know it's over in NY but just wait until February when they start showing Fall fashions. I know, Feb is before Spring and they just showed Spring, but that's how they do it!

Anyways, MUCH more importantly. I hate to jinx it, but...the manager of the Aspen J.Mendel who has become a special friend (Andrew and I and my mom went the day after I got engaged and had champagne with her and she just helped me get the most supertacular-out-of-control-over-the-top-gorgeous-perfection of a coat for my 30th BDAY and we had more champagne (they just have Tattinger in the back for special occasions....)) invited me and my mom (if she can come up) to the J.MENDEL SHOW at FASHION WEEK FEBRUARY 2008 (I chose to highlight that in flat grey, the color my name will be monogrammed into my coat, squeal!). I almost threw-up I was so excited...and also to get ready for all the skinny model-y people there. Now I can be one of the people who wears the designer to the show. I really will have a heart attack if I go. I can't even stand it! Plus, it'd be what, like an hour or two? I cld take a long lunch and be back in the office, like Cinderella (without the evil stepsisters or step-mother), since the tents are across the street from my office.

Click on http://www.jmendel.com/ then "boutique" on the bottom, then "Aspen", and picture me in the chairs w/my champagne.

Really 100% out of control! Whoopdie f-ing do!!!!! It's totally gorg!

Yeah, yeah, I understand why people are against fur, but the coat is really stunning!

NEW CANDY STORE!!!

Don't know much about this place yet, but the website is cool.

Always read about the chefs in NYC?

Want to see them work? Planning a special occasion?

Check out these picks for a chefs table in NYC.

ps. I know it says "take your teenager" but whatever....

Bored of clicking the same old mouse?

Stop it pervert!

Try these: (early Hannukah/Xmas anyone?)

Mouse Envy
makes adorable mouse covers/replacements. Bring one to work...where everyone envy's you already!

NEW STORES!!!

A link to Shecky's...a reference for all good NYC dwellers of a certain age...or those that wish they were still that certain age....(anyone tried the Dr. Wexler line @ Bath and Body...ya know the one that erases fine lines??)

Ever get those strechy-line-things in your t-shirt?

Ya know, the ones where it doesn't fit right across the boobal region? YOU know what I mean, every person of every size has tried on things that don't fit! If you're not sure, put on a kids size T. See those too-tight lines?

Try these T's. They're sized by bra size! GENIUS!!! Like that brand of button downs. 100 pts to whoever tells me the button down brand 1st.... You can use those points to feel good about yourself without any expiration date. I'll remind you you have them when I think you need to know.

Ever been to a drive in?

I tried to go once, but the only thing showing in Cape Cod was Saving Private Ryan and making out and ignoring that seemed....well, unseemly. So we skipped it. So I've never been. A, are you reading this!? Ignore the part about almost making out with someone else and click on "full schedule and online booking." (ps. anyone know the "." rule? inside or outside of the """ (how do you even quote a quotation mark? I was SURE it was punctuation INSIDE the "s but there are always exceptions. Anyone have their Blue Book?)

Anyways there's a new place on the LES(of course) that has a drive in...sort-of....check it out.

There's lots to do in Aspen besides shop....

like EAT! I (and my mother, sorry to out you), had 2 servings of Parmesan truffle fries in 24 hours (note to self: NEVER EVER tell trainer about this blog). Actually, we each had 1 serving because we split 2 and if I recall anything about fractions (like 1/2 a lbs and you round down to the nearest round number, like 132.5lbs = 130 lbs....or is that estimating(?), which my friends and family know I'm horrible at) then I'm right about that.

Anyways, since I'll be back in NYC on Monday and have NO more room for anything else, here's some info for you guys. I've been to S'Mac, the day it opened with a trusted friend who will also, never ever tell my trainer about this blog, and it was DELISH. So here are some other mac 'n' cheese restos for you.

Back from Aspen and ready to shop!

Ok, I really did plenty of shopping there, it's like Madison Ave in 6-8 adorable square blocks, plus scenery like you can't believe. You're either walking towards THE mountain or towards RED mountain where all the HUGE houses are (but ick bc they're not ski in/out)....altho I'd like to see one, just one. The rich people house tour (they actually have one) drives you past them, but you can't go inside....alas. I'll have to suffer in the Ritz in the Highlands and eventually at the Little Nell.

Anyway, I'm back and going to try to catch-up....sorry if some of the new posts are old news....I just don't believe that no news is good news. ESPECIALLY if it's about shopping or events to go to. that said, there's a shopping event (right near my office) at the Elie Tahari Showroom (which is right below/above? the Theory Showroom), I'm almost positive you get 20%-30% off.

Check out this ad:
The Showrooms are located at 520 5th Ave between 43rd and 44th streets on the West side of the St. Go upstairs and ENJOY!!!!

MEET THE BEST IN BRIDAL

Now that we've finalized the details, here's a sneak-preview of the experts you'll meet at our upcoming Best in Bridal showcase on September 25th, plus the goodies you'll be taking home:

(Oh, and by the way, if you're expecting sales people handing out promotional materials, you are in for a big surprise. We've got the head honchos themselves, and we've asked them all to do something uniquely interactive with our guests.)

So . . .

Bernard Maisner will be hand-printing guests' names on his exquisite stationery. David Hechler will be shooting candid portraits that you can take home. Ron Ben-Israel will be offering cake tastings. Robert Bardin Robert Palomo (of Bardin Palomo) will be designing floral arrangements and answering questions about trends. Jennifer Behr will be fitting her gorgeous headpieces. Vosges owner Natalie Markoff will be there with a fully decked chocolate buffet (have as many truffles as you wish!). Mark Ingram will be arm-in-arm with models dressed in next season's hottest gowns. And more!

Raffle winners (tickets included with your entry fee!) will walk away with prizes including a personalized magnum of Moet Chandon, a three-month membership to Equinox, and tea for two at the St. Regis Hotel.

And every guest will take home a goody bag stuffed with full-sized products (no samples, no promotional materials) like Hip-G thongs by OnGossamer, mascara by Lancome, nail polish by O.P.I., lip gloss by fresh, Complete Treatment by Laboratoire Remede, a $50 gift card for waxing or tanning at Completely Bare and much, much more!

Tickets are still available. To RSVP, email us at events@bffbridal.com or call 646.417.7071.

Hope to see you there!

Hello from Aspen!

It's been windy, chilly, then sunny and perfect here so far. There's a tray of warm chocolate chip cookies waiting for us when we got back from dinner. I've had one and I'm writing fast so I can have another then go get ready for bed...I KNOW it's Saturday night...I KNOW, but we woke up early and have jet lag.....

I can see the spot where our save-the-date picture was taken....about 5 minutes after we got engaged. Oh, I was so thin then....thin and in love. I miss those perfect black Citizen jeans....I wore then until they fell apart...I even tried to sew them back together...yes I can sew.

Off to have that cookie....I'm on vacation!

More soon, JES

Brilliant for anyone who saves magazines...

I rip out pages, or just entire sections of magazines...why should I carry around a pound of ads when I can just take the articles I want, toss them in my bag and then toss those pages in the trash when I'm done? Exactly! (I also rip out all the cardboardy pages before I start reading...ya know all those pages that make the magazine even heavier and have the perfume or the samples attached? I HATE those pages!)

So, this table really solves the problem, like when our parents and grandparents saved old Life magazines, or when I saved National Geographic....you never know when you'd get an assignment on some topic....plus, there was no Internet when I was doing reports....My freshman year of college was the first year Brandeis had email and it was some ridiculous long thing w/ #s and letters, not just your name...

Here is the review of the table from Best Bets of NYMag:
Editorial Control
BY RIMA SUQI
If you're like a lot of New Yorkers we know, you hang on to your magazines for months and months, yet storing them all remains a dilemma. Those stacks piled up in the bathroom? Not pretty. Satina Turner has designed a clever solution: a table that doubles as a very stylish magazine rack. Just drop the magazines in the slots and voilĆ ! The spines face out, so you'll always know which pub you're reaching for. Plus, the flat surface makes for a perfectly functional coffee table.

Movies I want to see:

Please note: this list is based on VERY brief descriptions and I haven't read any read reviews...

Death Sentence (Kevin Bacon...everybody cut, everybody cut....)
December Boys (Daniel Radcliffe)
The Hunting Party (Richard Gere, Terrence Howard and the kid from "The Squid and the Whale")
Shoot 'em Up (Clive Owen v. Paul Giamatti)
Lust, Caution (period romance from Ang Lee)
The Darjeeling Limited (see other post)
The Good Night (The Paltrows)
Grace is Gone (John Cusack - sigh)
Heartbreak Kid (Ben Stiller...previews look stupid...like something he's already been in)
Michael Clayton (George Clooney)
My Kid Could Paint That
Dan in Real Life (Steve Carell is funny doing nothing!)
Elizabeth: The Golden Age (can't wait!)
Reservation Road (mark Ruffalo, Joaquin Phoenix and Jennifer Connelly)
We Own the Night (Marky Mark!)

I love Crate & Barrel

I registered there. I love all the little things in the bins that I don't need. Our dining room (nook) table is from there.

I called them to see if I could register at CB2 but they "weren't set up for that yet" or some BS. NOW, not only are the ready, they are opening a store in NY!!!!

NYMag called CB2, "the timmer, glossier, and more modern offshoot of Crate & Barrel." so there! I knew I wanted it before I could have it...such is life.

They're coming to SoHo: 451 Broadway near Grand....also, near Uniqlo and Bloomies and Old Navy...

Things to do in September 2007

Go see Claire Danes in Pygmalion.

Love Julie Andrews as My Fair Lady (wonder why I'm talking about a TOTALLY different show? google it, learn something)? go get your fix in Mary Poppins on Broadway it's supercalifragilisticexpialidocious-irrific.

Don't wanna go to the theater district? Check out The Darjeeling Limited with Owen Wilson (we hope he's better soon), Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman. The movie premiers Sept 28th at the New York Film Festival.

Whoopie! San Gennaro starts...

...tomorrow! I know many of us can't go but it lasts for a while so this is just a heads up.

While it is officially a religious holiday or festival, really (for me anyway) it is a chance to get fried dough covered in powered sugar in a brown paper bag so you can see the oily drop through. LOVE ZEPPOLES...which I'd never heard of before moving to NY. MD really really needs more zeppoles.

Note to self (and Joel): when we open our boutique, cupcakery, record store, graphic design center, stationery store, we MUST sell zeppoles!

Awesomest News!

Magnolia Bakery, the cupcakery (which is what I'd name my bakery) in the Village that everyone knows, is opening an UWS outpost. I'd be more enthusiastic if I LOVED their cupcakes. I like the icing, but the cake never did it for me. The Nilla wafer and banana pudding, tho, I cld die! It's one of the best foods on earth and I'm not exaggerating. They also have the icebox cake that my mom used to make...literally.

Anyways, here's the scoop (ice cream cupcakes is a genius idea, GENIUS, there are ice cream cakes, why not ice cream cupcakes? They had them at Maggie Moos and although I never had one (A, why is that?) I am still on the lookout. My Maggie Moos closed...still not sure why. )

Exclusive: Magnolia Bakery Opening Upper West Side Outpost
Wednesday, September 12, 2007
The now-shuttered Lenge at 69th Street and Columbus. Soon to be a Magnolia Bakery.
At this time, we'd instruct you to brace yourselves, but that's just not going to get it done. Rumors that the Upper West Side will soon get an outpost of the mega-famous Magnolia Bakery are 100% true. As confirmed to Eater late last night by Magnolia owner Steve Abrams, Magnolia UWS will open in the space that was Lenge between Thanksgiving and Christmas. "I live on the Upper West Side," says the man. "My friends who know I own Magnolia keep asking when I'm going to open them a bakery up here. So I think it's time."
This location will be quite a bit bigger than the Bleecker Street original, though plans are to preserve much of the small quarters feel of bakery uptown. Abrams will do a gut renovation on Lenge, before he installs Magnolia with an "updated look" from architect Mark Zeff (Red Cat, Mermaid Inn). As a special bonus to the neighborhood, the new space will have a private party room, which is guaranteed to make the Upper West Side parent set quite happy, at least until a highly localized child obesity problem sets in.
We posed the question to Abrams of whether he's hoping to ease some of the Sex and the City tourist burden his downtown store faces: "Downtown is not the neighborhood place it was opened to be. It's taken on a different shape—and we love our customers there, but it's just different. This one [on the UWS] in my mind is really a neighborhood place. You're not going to have the tourists, I don't think. Hopefully we can keep it a neighborhood secret." A near impossibility, of course, but we wish him the best of luck with it.

Harvest in the Square

Yummy food event in Union Square. LOVE the taste of NY events....lots of great restos in one place for WAY less than if you went to them all individually.

Check out Harvest in the Square for more details about this event Thurs Sept 20. Fill up before the big fast!!!

Planes, Trains and Automobiles....

for me this week.

Train home to MD. Flight to Aspen. Driving around wherever.

Looking forward to my trips and to celebrating the holidays with my family.

Not looking forward to not having Internet(why is this capitalized by spellcheck? WHY?) all the time. Blogging will most likely be slow, if at all, the next week and one half (I'd always rather write week and a half but apparently that's wrong). I'm back on 100% next weekend.

Happy New Year to those who celebrate (my adorable doorman didn't seem to know what I was talking about when I need a cab for my HEAVY suitcase. I forgive him. He's SO cute) and happy normal week (although perhaps not in NYC, I know my building is about 80% Jewish and won't allow work to be done....even if your kitchen is being renovated and you have no place for your holiday meal....trust me) to those who don't.

Miss you already,
JES

R to the O to the S to the H...

Love the High Holidays? Love R&B? This is for you.

L'Shana Tova

I have seen 1-2 events that I'd regularly post about but they are planned for either Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur. Of course not all of my readership (?) ( audience(?)), is Jewish, but since this blog started (once my bro created it) as things I would want to do and since I wouldn't do them on those days I didn't post them. Trust me girls, you're not missing anything....

All that said to introduce the next item: ChocoBacon. Ok, it's fancier than that, but OH how I wished I ate bacon. I LOVE sweet/salty (chocolate covered pretzels are my fav (it bothers me when people write fave since that's not have favorite is spelled and if you're shortening the word favorite shouldn't it be fav? Like Rach for Rachel, not Rache. Altho I am guilty of vacay for vacation, but for some reason (my own) that's OK. moving on...)(oops, I also do Rae for Rachel...I bother myself apparently). really, moving on...

I like other Vosges chocolate so I'm sure I'd like this too. They also have the thick yummy hot chocolate. I'm working on a map for you guys (and the world) of NYC hot chocolate spots for fall/winter. Then I'll move on to the cupcake map, but that seems daunting.

OHMIGOD, look what I just found. Fondue pot anyone???? Registering for stuff I don't need but LOVE to use was brilliant. Thanks Liz G., you guys still have to come over for our triple!

Not everyone in Brookyln sounds like a hoodlum(sp?)

Since my husband is from Brooklyn, I know, all too well, what people from Brooklyn sound like...some more than others, others more when they're angry (although A never gets angry so I'm just guessing).

No matter what they sound like, some really are really smart! Trust me.

If you don't believe me, go to the Brooklyn Book Festival. It's in my old law school 'hood so I can assure you it's nice. When you're done wander down Montague Street, check out 180, my old apt house, go to the Starbucks where I spent years of my life, get an ice tea/lemonade at Lassen & Hennings, check out Tango for some cute clothes, and go to the new burger place (it's upstairs in the space that used to be a coffee shop, and then 100 other things, or is that the other upstairs space....whatever). Walk all the way to the end and wander down the promenade for a gorgeous NYC view.

West Siders!

Columbus Avenue is having a street fair on the 16th.

I just went to the 3rd ave street fair and had corn on the cob....it was the healthiest option. The butter was delicious too! I avoided the plants, underwear and socks...and make-up. LOVE Street Fairs!

Can't wait for San Gennaro...I can get a deep fried oreo and zeppoles and pizza and kick a** at the cross bow again. Yup, this little girl from Potomac, MD can shoot a cross bow AND GET A BULLS-EYE! Yup, I scared the big italian guys on the street. They figured, "she must be a cop!" I'd like to thank, Valley Mill Camp and Pocono Highland Camps for their excellent archery and riflery classes that I went to. I skipped boating and tennis (I was horrible) and did some awesome arts and crafts (always my choice for "optionals" which was right after "rest hour" which looking back was the entire summer!). And another rambling post comes to an end. I do have a pix of that bulls-eye. I'll find it and post it.

FOUND IT:

hmm, where is that sweater?

Bridal Event!!!

Fashion Show and extras at Jenny Yoo!!!

Check it out. Only $25 for the bride + one guest. Seems like one of the cheaper bridal events in NYC.

Turning 30 wasn't really THAT big a deal....

...however, if all of your clothes fit differently, it's likely your bra does too.

Check out this site by playtex to solve all your over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder woes.

Never too early for holiday shopping?

This skirt is gorgeous, perfect for the fall/winter and would be the most professional yet dressy option for the office holiday party!

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT
! Love almost anything with ruffles and this is great because it even has fun in the back.

Gimme More? Ick Boo and Yuck!

I'm not a celeblogger but honestly I couldn't let this go.

Britney blew hard at the VMAs last night.

Check it out for yourself. She's a little chub, not lipsynching, hardly dancing and smiling when she remembers. Yes, I'm not on stage waiting for my come back in front of people waiting for me to fail and I don't have 2 kids and I'm not world famous, but honestly, get it together! If it's your JOB to look good and entertain people then do it well or don't bother. I like the song, but I'd rather listen to it without the "performance."

UPDATE: apparently you can only view the video on mtv.com even though they give a link to use it. Go to mtv.com and it's easy to find....if you dare...

Wait try this:

Just a little reminder of how great things used to be...there's this:

and this:

Portion control your issue?

I don't have any issues. None. I just like to eat and have something fun to look at when I'm done (besides my too tight pants)...these bowls can help both issues.

Events that need to happen in NYC!

You should all know by now that MD and VA are two totally separate places! Growing up in MD I can tell you that they are so separate there's even a river (the Potomac, where I'm from...the town, not the river) that runs right through them (through DC really, well thru MD and VA at Great Falls where you can hike and picnic and go on field trips and bike(if you know how)) anyway...

So when I read that not only is this event not happening in NY (the current center of the universe) or even MD (the only other option), but in VA, I was hesitant to even post it. For those of you who don't know from DelMarVa(DELaware, MARyland and Virginina (see they can't even do the first few letter abbreviation thing right!)(VA did give us the 1st 5 presidents which is historically interesting, depending on how you feel about history.....and presidents), it's like the NY Tri-State and MD:VA::NY:NJ.

However, my love of Starbucks (no river between me and mine on 3rd Ave) couldn't let me let this one go by.

Check out the Starbucks Coffee Festival. Maybe it will come to NY and if not, who wants it anyway? (my hand is up and waving in that annoying-kid-in-class way)

Did you feel the cab strike?

Meet anyone fun sharing a ride?

Next time try Ride Amigos. Save $$$ and possibly make new friends...or crazy people and have a great story to tell everyone when you get where you're going!

I've added the link to the list on the right.

This is VERY GTK (Good To Know):
found this on The Diet Detective

Mocha Madness
by Charles Stuart Platkin
Every day, Americans drink more than 300 million cups of coffee, and, while most are brewed at home, the Specialty Coffee Association reports that an ever-growing number are being purchased from coffeehouses like Starbucks. On its own, coffee is not fattening -- in fact, it has no calories. The problems start with what we add to it -- milk, sugar, whipped cream, chocolate and more. And as if that weren't enough, we're getting our coffee from a place that also offers cakes, croissants and other treats -- making your local coffeehouse more dangerous for dieters than a fast-food restaurant. Think about this: Just one piece of coffee crumb cake and a fancy Frappuccino with whipped cream (1,180 calories total) can add up to more calories than a Big Mac, medium fries and a soda (1,060 calories). Oh, and if you've heard rumors that caffeine helps you burn calories -- let's just say that if it really made much of a difference, Americans would be in pretty good shape because we're the largest consumers of caffeine in the world. However, there are choices. As Starbucks claims, there are more than 21,000 beverage combinations to choose from, not to mention the baked goods, sandwiches and salads. Here are a few hints to help you make better choices the next time you have your cup of java.

STARBUCKS REDUCED FAT BLUEBERRY COFFEECAKE VERSUS CHOCOLATE FILLED CROISSANT
Surprisingly, the Chocolate Filled Croissant at 350 calories is a better choice than the 380-calorie coffeecake. Plus, the coffeecake is made with trans fat and has 500 milligrams of sodium. Neither is a healthy choice (doughnuts, croissants, muffins and scones aren't necessarily part of a good diet), but if you're going to have one anyway, at least choose the better option. Fit Tip: Just because it has yogurt or is low in fat doesn't mean it's healthy. For instance, Starbucks Lemon Yogurt Bundt Cake is certainly not a healthy choice at 350 calories. Keep your total coffee shop calories under 350 -- for both your drink and dessert.

DUNKIN' DONUTS STRAWBERRY CHEESE DANISH VERSUS CHOCOLATE FROSTED DONUT
The doughnut actually wins. The Danish (250 calories) isn't bad considering other potential dieting nightmares, but the doughnut has "only" 200 calories. Doughnuts certainly aren't diet food, but, believe it or not, if you avoid the cake and cream-filled varieties, they might be better than some of the muffins, scones and Danishes. Even a jelly doughnut has just 210 calories; compare that to a Starbucks Crumb Cake with a whopping 670 calories. Fit Tip: All doughnuts are not created equal -- and I'm not talking about the difference between Krispy Kreme versus Dunkin' Donuts. Cake doughnuts have twice as much fat as yeast doughnuts, and it really does matter whether you have frosting, sprinkles or a glaze. Just take a look at the difference between Dunkin' Donuts Chocolate Frosted Yeast Donut (200 calories) and the Chocolate Frosted Cake Donut (360 calories).

STARBUCKS WHITE CHOCOLATE MACADAMIA NUT COOKIE VERSUS RASPBERRY AND CREAM CHEESE FILLED CROISSANT
Who would have thought? The cookie (470 calories) has almost twice as many calories as the croissant (260 calories).Fit Tip: For baked goods, your best bet at most coffeehouses is typically biscotti at around 110 to 150 calories.

DUNKIN' DONUTS EGG CHEESE ENGLISH MUFFIN SANDWICH VERSUS REDUCED CARB BAGEL
The English muffin sandwich (280 calories) wins, and it's not even close. The Reduced Carb Bagel starts out with 380 calories, and if you add cream cheese (190 calories for 2 ounces), you'll have eaten 570 calories before you even get to your coffee. Even a dry Sesame Bagel at Starbucks has 440 calories (not to mention everything we usually put on it) -- the same number of calories as their Raspberry Scone.Fit Tip: Scooping out the inside of the bagel can save you up to half the calories. Additionally, try low-fat cream cheese (110 calories for 2 ounces). A better breakfast would be low-fat yogurt and fresh fruit, which many coffee places now serve. For instance, try Starbucks Fresh Fruit Mix -- a cup of sliced fruit that has only 44 calories per 8 ounces and might be the best deal of all.

STARBUCKS FRUIT AND CHEESE PLATE VERSUS ROASTED TURKEY AND SWISS SANDWICH [I'm a big fan of this sandwich when you're starving and there's nothing else around..obv not kosher, but delish when you have them heat it up for you)
The Roasted Turkey and Swiss is one of the best lunch deals at Starbucks at only 320 calories -- much better than the Fruit and Cheese Plate at 430 calories. However, the other sandwiches and salads at Starbucks are mostly very high in calories. Fit Tip: Many coffeehouses have started to introduce foods other than baked goods, and they've been a huge success. The problem is that when you prepackage sandwiches or salads, there's a potential cost in terms of calories. Unless dressings or calorie-laden condiments are on the side, your lunch may be no better than your worst fast-food choice. So be on the lookout, and don't choose any sandwich that's more than 400 calories -- many of them are labeled.

DUNKIN' DONUTS COFFEE COOLATTA WITH SKIM MILK VERSUS STARBUCKS ESPRESSO FRAPPUCCINO LIGHT
It's actually a pretty close call. The Espresso Frappuccino Light (140 calories for 16 ounces) wins by 30 calories. The Coolatta with skim milk has 170 calories in 16 ounces. Just in case you didn't know, a Frappuccino is coffee and milk blended with ice.Fit Tip: Always choose skim milk or, at the very least, low-fat milk for coffee and tea drinks. The Coolatta with cream has 180 more calories than the Coolatta with skim milk.

CHOCOLATE MILK/HOT CHOCOLATE VERSUS CHANTICO DRINKING CHOCOLATE
The Chantico at Starbucks has 390 calories and 21 grams of fat (10 of them saturated), and that's only for 6 ounces. Sixteen ounces of chocolate milk/hot chocolate, on the other hand, has 340 calories and 15 grams fat (8 saturated). That's a lot of chocolate. How about having 12 ounces of nonfat chocolate milk/hot chocolate (no whipped cream) for 190 calories? Fit Tip: You're better off having a regular coffee with skim milk and Splenda, and if you're at Starbucks, you can get one of those little dark chocolate squares at the front counter to satisfy your chocolate craving. They're small -- only 60 calories. Or try the sugar-free flavored syrups for no extra calories.

STARBUCKS ICED TAZO CHAI TEA LATTE VERSUS DUNKIN' DONUTS CARAMEL SWIRL LATTE WITH SOY MILK
The Chai tea is the better option here at 200 calories for 12 ounces -- you get 2 more ounces for fewer calories than the 10-ounce latte (210 calories). Tea without sugar and milk has virtually no calories, but when you start to make it fancy, the calories add up. Take a look at Starbucks Tazo Chai Creme Frappuccino Blended Tea (16 oz): 510 calories, or a Dunkin' Donuts Vanilla Chai -- 230 calories for 10 ounces. Fit Tip: Herbal tea -- it's flavored and has no calories.

ESPRESSO VERSUS CAPPUCCINO VERSUS LATTE VERSUS CAFE AU LAIT
At five calories per ounce, a shot of espresso is your best deal. A Starbucks Cappuccino -- an espresso with a small amount of steamed milk and a deep layer of foam -- has 150 calories for 16 ounces. A latte is an espresso with more steamed milk than a cappuccino, also topped with foam -- it has 260 calories for 16 ounces. Cafe Au Lait is a one-to-one mix of coffee and steamed milk, and has 140 calories for 16 ounces. Starbucks Espresso Macchiato, a sweet espresso shot with a small amount of foamed milk, also seems like a good deal at only 10 calories for an ounce, if that's all you have. Fit Tip: Skip the whip. Adding whipped cream to your drink packs on at least an extra 100 calories and as much as a quarter of a day's worth of saturated fat. Your server will probably add it unless you request to have it left off. So go ahead and ask!

The OTHER Bloomies events....for Sept (and early Oct)

Here you go. Plan early, leave happy:

Wanted to delete all the stupid stuff, like men's jeans, etc...but who knows if you or your boyfriend/fiancee/husband/lover/whatever needs something. It's all about making it easier for you! Sorry Dad and A and Joel(the only men that probably read this...)

I say go to any event sponsored by a magazine and anything that says "personal appearance" by anyone you like. Also, any engaged ladies should go to all registry events....because you can!

Vintage Shopping Bag Tour
September 4, 2007 - September 16, 2007
More than any other store, Bloomingdale's enjoys a unique legacy with the arts, most distinctively represented through its historic and historical shopping bags. In 1961, the store commissioned artist Jonah Kiningstein to create a special shopping bag for one of its import fairs. The design was daring for its use of color and for flagrantly omitting the store's name, yet it was unmistakably Bloomingdale's.Over the next three decades artists, architects, photographers, graphic designers, and fashion designers created bags for Bloomingdale's and raised the medium to fine art. For the Artrageous celebration, the store has gathered 60 of these landmark shopping bags for exhibitions in seven stores. It includes works by Neville Brody, Antonio Lopez, Michael Graves, Gene Grief, Geoff Kern, Franco Moschino, Sonia Rykiel, Matthew Rolston, Anthony Russo and Ettore Sottsass among others.Stop by the Designer Boulevard on 4 to see this limited-time exhibit.
